Engineering Countermeasures for Left Turns at Signalized Intersections: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Left turn crashes can impact the safety of drivers due to speed and angle at which they occur. turns are specifically reported affect older more than other types crashes. This paper provides a review existing engineering countermeasures that have been evaluated improve driver left turns. Twentyeight studies on signal displays (protected turns, flashing yellow arrow, digital countdown timers), intersection geometry (offset lanes, diverging diamond interchange, roundabouts, exit lanes for turn, bay extension, contraflow lanes), warning systems (infrastructure systems, in-vehicle systems) reviewed. Eighteen were in field, nine laboratory environments, one online. All demonstrated varying levels effectiveness. We found protected be most effective countermeasures. Advantages disadvantages each countermeasure research shortcomings evaluation discussed. Review findings may help practitioners researchers guide drivers.

Developing an Analytical Model and Simulation of The Contraflow Left-Turn Lane at Signalized Intersections
At some intersections, excessive queue lengths may spill out of the left-turn bay and block the through lanes, jeopardizing level of service for the entire intersection. One of the most effective plans recently presented by the researchers is the "Contraflow left-turn lane" (CLL) In this method, left-turn vehicles will use the nearest lane in the opposite direction in addition to the usual left...
متن کاملDelay Variability at Signalized Intersections
Delays that individual vehicles may experience at a signalized intersection are usually subject to large variation due to randomness of traffic arrivals and interruption caused by traffic signal control. While such variation may have important implications for the planning, design and analysis of signal controls, currently there is no analytical model available to quantify it. This paper descri...
متن کاملPerception of Waiting Time at Signalized Intersections
Introduction Perceived waiting time (PWT) at signalized intersections differs from the real value of waiting time (WT), and varies with signal design. The onerousness of delay depends on the conditions under which it is experienced. Using weighted travel time may contribute to optimal signal control if its use can improve upon assuming that all time is weighted equally by users. This research e...
متن کاملAngle-accident Risk at Signalized Intersections
This paper demonstrates how a new modeling methodology can be applied to intersection angle-accident risk evaluation with data collected from 81 signalized intersections in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Angle collisions between through traffic flow and opposite right-turn (please note that vehicles travel along the left side of the road in Japan) traffic flow are the second most common type at s...
متن کاملEvaluation of bike boxes at signalized intersections.
This paper presents a before-after study of bike boxes at 10 signalized intersections in Portland, Oregon. The bike boxes, also known as advanced stop lines or advanced stop boxes, were installed to increase visibility of cyclists and reduce conflicts between motor vehicles and cyclists, particularly in potential "right-hook" situations. Before and after video were analyzed for seven intersecti...
